Responsible Art Market Initiative—Annual Conference January 25, 2024 in Geneva

Posted by Nicholas O'Donnell on January 16, 2024 at 10:51 AM

The Responsible Art Market Initiative will hold its annual conference next week in Geneva on January 25, 2024 (Thursday) at the art fair artgenève. RAM, which has increasingly been recognized as an industry leader in best practices in the art market, will present a keynote speaker and two discussion panels (one of which I will chair). The program and registration are available here.

After introductory remarks by Anne Laure Bandle of Borel & Barbey, Anthony Meyer of Galerie Meyer Oceanic & Eskimo Art in Paris will deliver the keynote address.

Next, I will moderate a panel of experts to discuss the current antiquities market. We will present and analyze some updated guidance to the RAM Due Diligence toolkit to address the antiquities market specifically.

The final panel of the day will discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and at. Few topics are as salient today as AI.

RAM’s events are always a unique opportunity to gather with art market participants from many sectors of the market. I look forward to seeing you in Geneva!

Responsible Art Market Initiative--Intermediaries and Sustainability in the Art Market January 28, 2022 in Geneva

Posted by Nicholas O'Donnell on January 5, 2022 at 2:39 PM

After a two-year hiatus, the Responsible Art Market Initiative is planning a return to its in-person annual conference at the end of this month in Geneva. For anyone who has attended RAM events or used its catalogue of guidance and best practices, this is exciting news and hopefully a chance to gather in a format that has been informative and enjoyable for many years now. As before, the gathering will be at the Palexpo in Geneva and the artgeneve art fair.

This year’s topic is Intermediaries and Sustainability in the Art Market. I am pleased to have shepherded a working group that has drafted practical guidelines for intermediaries in the art market. We will present the guidelines, and then several intermediaries will work through a practical case study. In addition, panelists will discuss the role of sustainability in the marketplace.

Stay tuned for registration information. Obviously conditions are changing rapidly, but I hope to see you in Geneva!

Event—Innovation and change in a Responsible Art Market

Posted by Nicholas O'Donnell on January 8, 2021 at 9:59 AM

As potential regulation of the art market gathers in the United States, the increasing relevance of the Responsible Art Market Initiative is ever clearer. And while we will miss gathering in Geneva for the first time in several years, RAM is undeterred. Join us on Friday January 29, 2021 for a virtual edition of the annual RAM event, this year entitled “Innovation and change in a Responsible Art Market.” The program follows below (including a virtual networking opportunity), and registration by 27 January 2021 can be accomplished using the following link: www.responsibleartmarket.org/event-registration

See you then. Until next year, this will have to suffice for ein Stückchen der Schweiz from last February:

Responsible Art Market Initiative Event in Geneva January 31, 2020—An Art Market in Evolution

Posted by Nicholas O'Donnell on January 16, 2020 at 5:40 PM

For several years late January has been occasion for gatherings of the Responsible Art Market Initiative, a collective of art market stakeholders striving for consistency and standards in the international market that started in collaboration with the Art Law Centre at the University of Geneva. I have been proud to contribute to the RAM Task Force as it composed the Due Diligence Toolkit and country guides for, among other things, anti-money laundering legislation, and I am currently on the Advisory Board.

New Court of Arbitration for Art to Launch in June, Offers Exciting Opportunity for the Art Market

Posted by Nicholas O'Donnell on May 17, 2018 at 11:41 AM

The recent announcement of the launch of the Court of Arbitration for Art (CAA) is exciting and intriguing news.  There is nothing peculiar to the art market or the art world about the existence of disputes—any businessperson in a wide variety of industries can testify to that.  But what is promising about this initiative is the opportunity it presents to streamline an important segment of art world disputes, and in so doing to create a larger body of legal guidance that will in itself be useful in and outside of formal controversies.  It does not supplant civil litigation in courts, nor does it make any pretense of doing so.  It could, however, become an important complement.  Critical will be enough buy-in from lawyers in particular to become willing to recommend its inclusion in contracts, for example.  I would certainly include myself in that group, depending on the specific circumstances.

Recap and Analysis: Responsible Art Market Initiative Launched in Geneva

Posted by Nicholas O'Donnell on February 1, 2017 at 9:35 AM

I was pleased to attend last week in Geneva “Building an Art Market for the Future—Guidelines for Countering Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Threats” hosted by the Fondation pour le Droit d’Art (Art Law Foundation) and the Art Law Centre of the University of Geneva.  The conference was the official launch of the Responsible Art Market initiative, and offered valuable, market-focused discussion about the risks of money laundering and terrorist financing in the art market.  Refreshingly, the day’s panel discussions focused on best practices and goals, rather than the oft-heard lamentations about problems with the art market.  The implicit point that came through was a powerful one: as both private sellers and law enforcement speakers explained, art dealers are not engaged in large-scale shadowy financial dealings.  But art dealers and buyers are at serious risk of being used by criminals engaged in money laundering, which can have serious consequences.  Because willful blindness is no defense, the conference and the initiative provided valuable practical advice.

Geneva Event: Building an Art Market for the Future—Guidelines for Countering Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Threats

The Fondation pour le Droit d’Art (Art Law Foundation) is a Geneva-based group that sponsors exploration of important topics at the intersection of art and law.  Over the last few years, often in collaboration with the Art Law Centre of the University of Geneva, they have explored with particular skill a number of complex questions about the commercial components of the international art market.  As we have touted before, their events are routinely of the highest quality.  I am pleased to note the following upcoming event on January 26, 2017 at artgenève, which I am very much looking forward to attending (the program is in English).  Registration is available here.  Hope to see you there!
